Westphalia’s Breeders of the Future
Event series for horse breeders and newcomers to breeding – a review

Those who start breeding today are shaping the Westphalian horses of tomorrow. With the event series “Westphalia’s Breeders of the Future”, the Westphalian Studbook offered newcomers to breeding and interested breeders a well-founded, practical introduction to horse breeding. Participants gained first-hand knowledge directly at the Westphalian Equine Centre in Münster-Handorf.

Pregnancy and Foaling
The first session was all about mare and foal. Participants learned how to feed broodmares according to their needs during pregnancy and lactation, and what matters most in the first care of the newborn foal. They also gained an insight into linear profiling and the mating planner. The day ended with a joint visit to the Spring Auction, where theory and practice came together.

What a Breeding Judge Needs to Know
The second session took an in-depth look at horse assessment. The program covered conformation theory, gaits and movement, the legal framework, the identification of horses and practical assessment. For anyone wishing to become a breeding judge, the day was also recognized as a preparatory course.

The future of breeding starts young

Would you like to become part of Westphalian breeding today?

Our junior breeders are young people and young adults up to the age of 25 who share a passion for horses and horse breeding. Membership of a breeding association or previous breeding experience is not required. Through in-hand presentation, conformation judging, loose jumping assessment and theory, our junior breeders gain valuable knowledge for the stable, the show ring and the auction. The best of them represents Westphalia at the National Junior Breeders’ Competition. The focus is always on sharing ideas and community spirit.
